{"id":838,"date":"2010-04-13T00:46:46","date_gmt":"2010-04-13T07:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westfamilyblog.com\/?p=838"},"modified":"2010-04-14T16:53:24","modified_gmt":"2010-04-14T23:53:24","slug":"madrid-segovia-toledo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westfamilyblog.com\/?p=838","title":{"rendered":"Madrid, Segovia, Toledo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re now in a little town in the Spanish <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrenees\">Pyrenees<\/a> called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ainsa\">A\u00ednsa<\/a>, enjoying a short break from big city excitement. The rest of our time in Madrid was fantastic.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a quick snapshot of an average day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Languish in our hotel until around noon, breakfasting on fresh fruit and lattes\/pastry from the coffee shop downstairs.<\/li>\n<li>Head out for some sightseeing, usually a long walk or a trip on what Claire called the &#8220;big red bus,&#8221; an open air tourist bus that loops through the city.<\/li>\n<li>Lunch at a cafe on one of Madrid&#8217;s many plazas, featuring ice cold <em>cerveza<\/em> while Juliet giggled at her sister running around.<\/li>\n<li>Return to the hotel for naps around 4pm.<\/li>\n<li>Head out around 8pm for another walk then <em>tapas<\/em> for dinner.<\/li>\n<li>Back to the hotel &#8212; and bed, finally &#8212; by midnight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Judy joined us for our last day in Madrid and was kind enough &#8212; despite her jetlag &#8212; to let Katherine and me go out for dinner and a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flamenco\">Flamenco<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.corraldelamoreria.com\/\">show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also visited two nearby cities.\u00a0 The first adventure was a day in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toledo,_Spain\">Toledo<\/a>, the beautiful 3000+ year-old city that was a former capital of the Spanish empire and a place where Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities thrived together for a thousand years until the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Inquisition\">Spanish Inquisition<\/a>. \u00a0The second was a stop at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Segovia\">Segovia<\/a>, notable for its beauty, its well-preserved <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aqueduct_of_Segovia\">Roman Aqueduct<\/a>, and for a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alc\u00e1zar_of_Segovia\">castle<\/a> that helped inspire Disney&#8217;s Cinderella Castle.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the picture of Claire and girls in a rowboat on a lake in Madrid&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buen_Retiro_Park\">Parque Buen Retiro<\/a> for a slideshow, which also includes a shot of our everpresent double-stroller and visiting playgrounds\/parks in Madrid&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plaza_de_Oriente\">Plaza de Oriente<\/a>, Toledo, and Segovia.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"toggleborder\" title=\"slideshow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/22311334@N00\/sets\/72157623723773851\/show\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"centered\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4039\/4518858638_37265144c7_m.jpg?resize=160%2C240\" alt=\"Katherine and the girls boating in Madrid\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re now in a little town in the Spanish Pyrenees called A\u00ednsa, enjoying a short break from big city excitement.
