{"id":868,"date":"2010-04-17T13:45:21","date_gmt":"2010-04-17T20:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westfamilyblog.com\/?p=868"},"modified":"2010-04-18T02:00:29","modified_gmt":"2010-04-18T09:00:29","slug":"volcanic-hazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westfamilyblog.com\/?p=868","title":{"rendered":"Volcanic hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The eruption of the delightfully named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull\">Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull<\/a> volcano in Iceland has made our European holiday a bit more interesting than expected. With <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_travel_disruption_after_the_2010_Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull_eruption\">most European flights canceled<\/a>, I ended up participating in my Wikipedia board meeting today over Skype from Barcelona. Many, many people are stranded on the wrong continent, plus every rental car, taxi, ferry and train in Europe seems to be fully booked. And there is no particular end in sight. Some Americans are even taking buses to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southampton\">Southampton<\/a> to book passage on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/OurShips\/default.asp?Ship=QM2\">Queen Mary 2<\/a> to New York.\u00a0The airports just north of us closed a few hours ago; we&#8217;re just waiting for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/aviation\/vaac\/vaacuk_vag.html\">ash cloud to move south<\/a>. It feels like a\u00a0lighter, happier version of Nevil Shute&#8217;s post-apocalyptic classic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_the_Beach_(novel)\">On the Beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that our core family is together, we&#8217;re on vacation with all the gear we need, and Grandma Judy is even here. Barring any last minute stiff breezes blowing the ash east of Frankfurt (where our original flight home connects), we&#8217;ll\u00a0be making\u00a0<em>limonada <\/em>out of lemons and\u00a0extending our stay from a few days to a few weeks depending on the pace of the eruption, the weather patterns, and flight rebooking options. We&#8217;re not sure what we&#8217;ll do yet, but we&#8217;re thinking about France or Portugal. Have a suggestion for us?
