Bassinet history

A few months ago, my sister Eileen was kind enough to send us the bassinet she used for her daughters Sara, Sophie and Susan. Here’s a picture of Claire snoozing in it today:

There’s a long history of this particular family heirloom (going back 75+ years). Click on the Comments link below to see some of the stories.

Proportions

I love infant proportions. Claire is about 20 inches long. Her feet are 3 1/2 inches long. If she were to grow to 5’10” (a safe bet given her parents) and maintain the same proportions, her left and right foot would each be over 12 inches long! That’s about a men’s size 15. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

Milestones

Our first few days since we came home from the hospital have been full of fun and important milestones. Here are a few of them:

  • Claire celebrated her third, fourth and today her fifth birth “days”
  • We did the first of many loads of her laundry
  • Claire had her first visit to our clinic and her first appointment with her pediatrician (she gained weight since leaving the hospital and showed good progress with her jaundice)
  • We purchased our first item of baby gear following her birth. Despite having at least 30 bottles around the house, we did not have the specific bottle we absolutely had to have. Needless to say, the only nearby place to purchase it was a swanky store not known for discounting.
  • We also made our first repeat purchase of a $50+ baby item that we already owned. We had managed to lose one critical piece which, of course, is not sold separately.
  • We met with a lactation consultant who had some great tips
  • Claire visited her first mall and napped while her parents had their first remotely healthy meal since she was born
  • We experienced our first diaper explosion
  • Katherine and I were asked for parenting advice from friends of ours who are pregnant with their first child. We are still laughing about that one.
  • We saw Claire smile for the first time
