Last Saturday we took our first road trip as parents, bundling Claire and at least 23 bags of critical essentials into the car and leaving at the crack of 11am for our old stomping grounds in San Francisco. Among other milestones, Claire enjoyed her first drive-thru lunch (though not the In-N-Out Burger her parents had), her first view of the Golden Gate Bridge on a walk at Crissy Field, and meeting her first cousins once-removed, Will and Kim (pictured below). We ended the trip with a dinner from the casual (and parent-friendly) pizzeria sibling of Delfina, one of our favorite restaurants in the city, and some ice cream dessert at the new but already locally famous Bi-Rite Creamery. All in all a fun day!
We’ve also included bonus pictures of Claire visiting her friend Sam (the new baby of our friends Joel and Kristin who is one week younger than Claire) and a few of Claire around the house. Click here or on the photo below for a slideshow.
While we realize a three-minute long, poorly-lit, plot-less, jerky movie taken with our little digital camera is not exactly Oscar-worthy, Katherine and I could watch this video of Claire waking up yesterday morning over and over again so we thought we’d share. Be sure to turn on your sound to enjoy every grunt, gurgle, and lip-smack of “dialog” as Claire stretches after Katherine lets her out of her little sleep sack. Even if you just see the first 30 seconds, it’s pretty cute.

Given that it’s 2007, Mona and I have decided to embrace the latest internet fad and post our first blog entry (with a little help from Stuart).
We have had a grand time on a West Coast tour, starting with a visit to young Mona in Seattle for a week. After a few days in town and visiting Mona’s office at Chateau Ste. Michelle, we drove up the Olympic Highway through the mountains to the East side of the Olympics for some gorgeous views. We had a lovely overnight visit to a town called Mazama and stayed in cozy little cabin at the Freestone Inn. Here’s a picture from our Chateau visit:
Next we headed down to the Bay Area for six days with Stu, Katherine and their little girl Claire. We’ve spent most of our time watching Claire eat, sleep, play, cry (not much), and generally amuse us all. We’ve also enjoyed many picnics in the backyard and had a fun dinner out Saturday at the local P.F. Chang’s. Claire seems to change every day and we’re anxiously awaiting the latest weight statistics to see just how much she gained during our visit (it seems like a lot!).
One interesting thing we learned was a set of handy tips for soothing a baby called the “Five S’s” from a book called The Happiest Baby on the Block: Swaddling, Side, Shhh, Swinging, and Sucking. I didn’t believe it at first but a friend of Katherine’s and Stu’s lent them a copy of video that shows how to do it, and both on the video and with Claire these really work! If you have small children, definitely give them a try.
We’re heading back home this afternoon, but wanted to share our trip with you. We’ve got lots more pictures — click here or on the picture below for a slideshow.
Claire’s Cousin Sara (with Aunt Eileen as chaperone) visited for the past few days and we had a great time. Highlights included Eileen’s deluxe cooking, Sara and I playing at our local park, a team effort at bathing Claire, all of us having dinner out at a fancy restaurant, Sara’s impressive babysitting skills, Katherine and I going out by ourselves to see a summer action flick, and many long afternoons around the house staring at Claire. We took one or two pictures for you. Click here or on the photo below for a slideshow.
