Appendectomy

We had a little excitement a few weeks ago. On the last Saturday night in July I woke-up at 5am with a lot of generalized stomach pain and nausea. It got worse and worse over the course of the morning and started to localize on my right side. By afternoon, I was at the Urgent Care clinic, where they looked me over, suggested I make an appointment with my regular doctor for Monday, and sent me home with some Tylenol. Within an hour of getting home, Claire, Stu and I headed off to the Stanford emergency room, where I proceeded to wait, doubled over in my chair, about 90 minutes before seeing an intern who looked about 15-years old and was not particularly helpful (Stu says he looked so young that he should be texting updates to his Myspace page, not diagnosing me). After a trip to radiology, though, they figured out I had acute appendicitis and scheduled me for emergency surgery at about 10:30 that night.

In the end, the surgery went fine. They got the appendix out before it burst and were able to do the surgery laparoscopically. Our neighbor Mark spent the first half of the night at our house keeping at eye on Claire. The only hitch was Stu’s lack of excitement that the on-call surgeon who did the procedure had the bedside manner of Grey’s Anatomy‘s Dr. McDreamy, and the looks to match.

I came home on Tuesday, spent a week at home recovering, and now three weeks after the surgery am completely recovered with three tiny incisions to show for it, including one inside my belly button!

Christmas 2007

We spent a wonderful few days in Arizona at my Mom’s house in Scottsdale with my sister Laura, her husband Rob, and their 7-year old son Will.  Highlights included brunch with my high school friends and their families, feeding Claire her first “solid” food using the Texas-themed bib Laura & Rob gave her, dinner at a fun Mexican restaurant, Claire trying on a cute pink dress that was mine when I was a baby, continuing a twenty-year tradition of homemade Chex mix, lots of fun presents for the kids including castle sets both for Will and for Claire, and Stu and I sneaking out for a really good movie.
