Spring 2011 catch-up

We collected a few pictures over the spring, including making cookies with a visiting Aunt Mona, Juliet enjoying the Sound of Music, an early spring visit to a family oriented “eco resort” on the Pacific coast called Costanoa and the nearby beaches, the girls doing yoga and playing games with me, Katherine doing a rainy triathlon with a group of her friends, a visit to a nearby zoo and amusement park, and finally Juliet’s two-year-old photo. Madrid, Segovia, Toledo

We’re now in a little town in the Spanish Pyrenees called Aínsa, enjoying a short break from big city excitement. The rest of our time in Madrid was fantastic.  Here’s a quick snapshot of an average day:

  • Languish in our hotel until around noon, breakfasting on fresh fruit and lattes/pastry from the coffee shop downstairs.
  • Head out for some sightseeing, usually a long walk or a trip on what Claire called the “big red bus,” an open air tourist bus that loops through the city.
  • Lunch at a cafe on one of Madrid’s many plazas, featuring ice cold cerveza while Juliet giggled at her sister running around.
  • Return to the hotel for naps around 4pm.
  • Head out around 8pm for another walk then tapas for dinner.
  • Back to the hotel — and bed, finally — by midnight.

Judy joined us for our last day in Madrid and was kind enough — despite her jetlag — to let Katherine and me go out for dinner and a Flamenco show.

We also visited two nearby cities.  The first adventure was a day in Toledo, the beautiful 3000+ year-old city that was a former capital of the Spanish empire and a place where Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities thrived together for a thousand years until the Spanish Inquisition.  The second was a stop at Segovia, notable for its beauty, its well-preserved Roman Aqueduct, and for a castle that helped inspire Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Tahoe Snow

We spent a long weekend in the snow at Lake Tahoe, meeting up with a group of Claire’s playgroup friends. Thanks to two or three big storms in the days before we arrived, there was lots of snowplay including an afternoon sledding adventure. Katherine and I even managed some skiing after a multi-year baby-related hiatus from the slopes and we all celebrated birthdays of both Katherine and her friend Jen. Also included are a few bonus pictures of Claire’s pigtails and her new hand-me-down train set from her cousin Will. Click on the picture of Claire sledding for a slideshow.

Cabo San Lucas

We spent the last week of October in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the house of an old boss of mine. Katherine’s mom Judy joined us for a lovely week that included celebrating Judy’s birthday with a hearty feliz cumpleaños and Claire christening Judy as her “go-ma.”  We also enjoyed lots of playtime on the beach and in the pool at our house, family dinners out in the nearby town of San Jose del Cabo, a romantic dinner for two on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, working together on the online New York Times crossword, and grown-up naptimes under the palapa reading and looking out at the ocean. October at home

Here’s a grab bag of photos from around the house in October:  Claire and her doll Mimi practicing potty training, Claire decorating sugar cookies, and some shots of Juliet, Katherine and my guitar taken with our new portrait lens.  Last up is a picture of our household’s first, but certainly not its last, tea party.  For a slideshow, click on the picture of Claire and Juliet sharing their new hot pink tent.

Home from hospital

Katherine and Juliet came home yesterday afternoon. Everything went smoothly in the hospital, as Juliet ate and slept well while Katherine speedily recovered from the c-section. Like her big sister, Juliet had some jaundice and as a result spent time getting blue light phototherapy in an incubator in the corner of our room. With her velcro sunglasses on, stretched out on her back napping in the light, she looked like a comic book superhero having a day at the beach.

Claire came to visit Sunday.  She met her little sister and then took Katherine on a walk, including visiting a model train set down the hall in the Children’s Hospital. Other highlights included Stu bringing Peet’s lattes and pastries each morning (and once getting a small piece of the very outer layer of a cinnamon roll for his effort), and sharing a bottle of champagne on the last night to celebrate Juliet and an early Valentine’s Day. Grandma Judy helped out in many ways, entertaining Claire throughout the day, serving as chauffeur in both the car and stroller, and helping Stu with dinner each night. Happy Birthday!

We celebrated Katherine’s birthday Sunday with lots of anticipation around our new arrival. There’s no sign yet of spontaneous rotation, so we remain on track for a c-section Thursday morning. In the meantime, we’re getting the new baby’s room set up, clearing to-do lists ahead of her arrival, thinking about names, charging camera batteries, and enjoying a final few minutes alone with Claire. Aunt Mona just left after an incredibly helpful five-day visit when she, among other things, taught us some tricks for homemade pizza, put together the new baby’s Ikea dresser which came in approximately 42,000 pieces, and baked Katherine a chocolate-with-cream-cheese-frosting birthday cake complete with 38 candles. Grandma Judy arrives tomorrow. We’ll post updates as we have them, so check back Thursday.

In the meantime, here are a few pictures to whet your appetite, starting off with a visit last weekend to see our friends Kaya/Kelley and their son Thaylo and ending with the only naked belly shot from today’s backyard photo shoot that Katherine would let me publish. Click on the fire hazard photo below for a slideshow.

Help wanted

We want our dedicated blog readers to be among the first to know that Katherine is pregnant. Our second baby girl is due to arrive in mid-February. We had the big 20-week ultrasound today — see below for a picture of her rubbing her eyes!

Claire has asked us to collect applications from aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends interested in entertaining her early next year. She’s partial to long walks around the neighborhood, swinging in the park, and eating sand. Must be able to multitask efficiently, dice avocados, and wipe dried squished peas off the kitchen floor while her parents adapt to her little sister.

Number two

Taiwan trip

I recently returned from a trip with my Tetra Tech friend Chih-fang (Claire’s 志芳阿姨) to visit her family in Taiwan. We started off with a day in Taipei, then headed south on the high speed rail to visit her sisters and brother in Kaohsiung and her parents in Meinong. We also took a two-day trip to the east coast of the island, to a beautiful rift valley. We stayed in the town of Yuli, where Chih-fang’s cousin Jamie teaches in a primary school. Here, we visited Yushan National Park and a mountainside covered in lilies. Of course, throughout the trip we managed to enjoy one of my favorite Taiwanese delicacies, bubble tea (珍珠奶茶). I had a great trip and everyone I met was extremely warm and friendly (and liked to comment on my height!).  I was, however, glad to return home and see Claire waiting for me just outside customs.  Click on the photo for a slideshow, and be sure to click the ‘Info On’ button on the top of the screen for a description of each picture.
