Christmas 2013

We’ve fallen behind posting pictures here. Thanks to Katherine’s photo organizing skills, we’ll be posting a half dozen catch ups over the next week or so.

Christmas 2013 took us to both Houston and Oklahoma City to see family. In Houston, we visited the Johnson Space Center with the girls’ cousin Will and had a fun Christmas morning (new pajamas!). We also got to visit Katherine’s old friends the Taylors and see their girls. Then it was off to Oklahoma City for much fun with the family there involving another Christmas morning, bowling, baths, and of course cheerio covered waffles.

Asia summer trip

In August we went on a really fun adventure to Asia. We began with a visit to the Philippines to see the best man at our wedding, Alex Siegel, and his lovely girlfriend Cathy. They treated us to the finest Filipino hospitality, hosting us both in Manila and in Anilao for a weekend of Scuba diving. We then jetted off to Hong Kong for a week where Stu had some Wikipedia meetings. The ever adventurous Grandma Judy joined us both in Manila and Hong Kong. Finally, we returned to Cebu in the central Philippines for five days of luxury at the Shangri-La, once again with Alex and Cathy, where Claire enjoyed her new favorite drink, a juice made with a Filipino lime-like  fruit called Calamansi .

Sayulita 2012

We headed down to Mexico in early March for a lovely week with Grandma Judy on the beach in a small town called Sayulita. With a non-stop flight, only a 2-hour time change, a great house to rent, and lots of fun restaurants a 10-minute walk away, it was just about perfect. Click on the picture of Claire and Juliet on the beach for a slideshow, including lots of playtime on the beach, walking along the promenade in Puerto Vallarta (about an hour away), eating pasta, playing in the pools, and enjoying rather large margaritas. Below the slideshow is a picture from my new Lytro camera, a cool new toy that allows you to click on different parts of the image and change the focus. Click on Juliet or the mountains in the background and try it!

Houston Christmas 2011

Our Christmas celebrations started off with a visit to Houston to see Grandma Judy, Laura, Rob and Will. Highlights included riding the train at Hermann Park, a saxaphone performance from Will, opening presents, lots of reading, brunch with the Hancocks, and dinner out at Katherine’s favorite Mexican restaurant Chuy’s. And, of course, lots of fun with Will on the trampoline. Click on the group picture for a slideshow.

Fall 2011 catch-up

In the Fall, adventures included fun in our yard with an inflatable whale-shaped kiddie pool, a visit from Grandma Judy, trips to the beach, school pictures, a visit to a local goat farm and dairy where Claire enjoyed eating freshly made goat cheese, a few pictures from Claire’s weekend-long visit to see her friend Maya in San Diego, and a Thanksgiving visit from our friends the Toths. Sun Valley Reunion

My latest extended family reunion was this summer in Sun Valley, Idaho. Stu, the girls and I all drove out there on a fun road trip which included a stopover in scenic Elko, Nevada. Thanks to some savvy negotiating by my Uncle Steve, we got upgraded to a lovely cottage right on the lake, with five bedrooms and a basement full of bunk beds for kids. Highlights included a long but beautiful hike off Lake Creek Rd, lots of barbecues and visits to the pool, hanging around our cottage with my Mom, Laura, Rob, Will, my Dad and Sharon (including listening to an Avett Brothers concert from our house which was right next to the concern pavilion), a dinner and hike up at Galena Lodge, and of course my cousin Bryson juggling fire. Easter 2011

For Easter this year we participated in some of our favorite rituals, including an Easter Egg hunt with friends in a nearby park, egg decorating, baskets and homemade blueberry muffins on Easter morning, and then brunch out at a nice restaurant on the coast in Half Moon Bay, all with Grandma Judy along for the weekend. Click on the picture of Juliet and Claire looking at their loot from the Easter Egg hunt for a slideshow.

Christmas 2010

Christmas this year was at home in California with a great series of visits from Katherine’s family.  We’ve got pictures of holiday preparations including Claire going to see the Nutcracker with some of her friends, visiting Santa (which Claire enjoyed and Juliet did not), fun in the kitchen including making a gingerbread man, a gingerbread train, and frosting-covered cookies for Santa’s reindeer. Next up is the visit from Grandma Judy, Aunt Laura, Uncle Rob and Cousin Will, who helped decorate the tree and of course open lots and lots of presents on Christmas morning. Finally, Grandpa Jack and Grandma Sharon came for a few days of fun including playing on the new backyard swing set, “riding the horsey” on Jack’s leg, visiting the nearby Rodin Sculpture Garden at Stanford, and finally reading books with Grandpa Jack.

Our quote of the month comes from Claire, who demonstrated her increasing listening comprehension one day:

Katherine to Stu: Laura and Rob are thinking of going out and taking you-know-who with them.
Claire: me?

Fall 2010 catchup

We had a busy few months and fell behind on pictures so here’s some to catch up, including the girls (mostly Claire) helping to make muffins one Sunday morning, testing out our new bike trailer, visiting our friend Carrie’s horse Sunny up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Juliet’s first play-doh experience, going to the beach with our friends the Revills and watching Claire and Anna build sandcastles, a visit from Judy around my birthday, the girls and their dolls, and of course the usual pics of eating and one of iPhone-powered potty time.

The girls are both talking a lot now so to give a sense of the Shakespearean dialogue we’ll start to sprinkle in some quotes.  Today, we’ve got two from Claire.  The first she said right after I started work:

Daddy started a new job, just like Curious George?

The second she said to Katherine one morning right after I left for the office:

I want mommy to go to work and daddy stay home and make grilled cheese.
