Christmas 2009, OKC

Our Christmas adventure this year began in Oklahoma City, where we visited my sister Eileen’s family. The week started off with a Christmas Eve record snowfall of over 12″ that triggered an Oklahoma state of emergency, an unplanned overnight stay for my Uncle Mike and Aunt Lou Ann, and lots of fun snowplay for the five girls under 11 in the house. Other highlights include cooking, presents, movie nights, volunteering at the local Food Bank where we packed bags and bags of frozen cauliflower, and Santa’s unexpected gift of Christmas the cat. Click on the family group shot below for a slideshow. My sister Eileen did a cool video of the week as well.

Merry Christmas 2009

Merry Christmas! To help celebrate, here are pictures of our preparations this year, including classic shots of the two girls screaming during their first visit to Santa’s lap, the photo below from the slightly less tumultuous second visit, Claire’s first experience with hot cocoa and her first gingerbread house, the holiday pageant at Claire’s preschool (can you spot her in the group shot?), and the two of them playing in front of our tree at home. Christmas 2008

We had a relatively quiet Christmas this year, staying at home and hosting Katherine’s mom.  Highlights included Claire trimming a tree for the first time, Grandma Judy taking Claire for long walks, Claire’s impersonation of her Daddy on his iPhone, lots of presents including a toy shopping cart, and the easiest Christmas dinner ever which we ordered and picked up in a huge box from our local market. Christmas 2007

We spent a wonderful few days in Arizona at my Mom’s house in Scottsdale with my sister Laura, her husband Rob, and their 7-year old son Will.  Highlights included brunch with my high school friends and their families, feeding Claire her first “solid” food using the Texas-themed bib Laura & Rob gave her, dinner at a fun Mexican restaurant, Claire trying on a cute pink dress that was mine when I was a baby, continuing a twenty-year tradition of homemade Chex mix, lots of fun presents for the kids including castle sets both for Will and for Claire, and Stu and I sneaking out for a really good movie. Merry Christmas, Mona!

A few years ago my family started a tradition of giving creative gifts to each other at Christmas. This year, my entry was a short video recorded with Katherine’s family singing new words to the title song from the 1966 TV special, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Click on the triangle Play button below to see the video.

Nana & Poppa Christmas visit

My parents came for a great six-day visit on their way to Seattle. Highlights included Claire and her Poppa going for long walks around the block in our new stroller, Claire sitting in a high chair for the first time during dinner out at P.F. Chang’s, decorating our mantle for Christmas, knocking off about 20 projects around the house, cooking our first prime rib with Mom’s help, a return visit to the Asian Art Museum, and finally buying lots of electronic gadgets both at Fry’s Electronics in Palo Alto and at the Stanford Mall. We’re off to Phoenix tomorrow for Christmas with Katherine’s family.
