We headed down to Houston to celebrate a late Christmas and New Year’s at my sister’s house. We started off with a trip to one of my favorite college hangouts, a tex-mex classic called Chuy’s. We then had a round of Christmas gifts for the kids. We took Claire on a visit to see butterflies at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Will then showed Claire around his trampoline, which she really really enjoyed. Not shown in the photos was the stomach flu that went around, but we all managed to get through it relatively unscathed. And last but not least we took Claire for her first ice skating adventure at an outdoor rink at the local mall. Click on the family group shot below for a slideshow.

Christmas 2009, OKC
Our Christmas adventure this year began in Oklahoma City, where we visited my sister Eileen’s family. The week started off with a Christmas Eve record snowfall of over 12″ that triggered an Oklahoma state of emergency, an unplanned overnight stay for my Uncle Mike and Aunt Lou Ann, and lots of fun snowplay for the five girls under 11 in the house. Other highlights include cooking, presents, movie nights, volunteering at the local Food Bank where we packed bags and bags of frozen cauliflower, and Santa’s unexpected gift of Christmas the cat. Click on the family group shot below for a slideshow. My sister Eileen did a cool video of the week as well.
Merry Christmas 2009
Merry Christmas! To help celebrate, here are pictures of our preparations this year, including classic shots of the two girls screaming during their first visit to Santa’s lap, the photo below from the slightly less tumultuous second visit, Claire’s first experience with hot cocoa and her first gingerbread house, the holiday pageant at Claire’s preschool (can you spot her in the group shot?), and the two of them playing in front of our tree at home. Fall catch-up
Before the photographic deluge of the holidays, we wanted to post some goodies from the past few weeks including Claire feeding Juliet, some portraits including Claire’s school picture, Claire demonstrating her passion for blueberries, and Juliet under her crib learning the downside of crawling only backwards. Finally, we’ve got a giggling video. Click on the picture of Claire and Juliet reading for the slideshow.
Yosemite weekend
We spent a long weekend just before Thanksgiving up near Yosemite National Park at a rustic spot called the Evergreen Lodge. With no telephones, no television, hardly any internet access, and family activities including a kids’ recreation room, it was a great break. We went on hikes each day, including seeing the fall foliage and having a picnic alongside Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite, which is the source of much of the Bay Area’s drinking water. Juliet experienced snow for the first time, and Claire threw her first snowball, on our hike down to the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. Claire also enjoyed her first s’more. For a slideshow, click on either the photo of us in front of Hetch Hetchy or the picture of all my girls playing in the snow.

Halloween 2009
Our first Halloween with two kids was so much fun we stretched it out over a few weeks, including trips to the pumpkin patch, costume tryouts, a party or two, backyard photo shoots, and at last an evening trick-or-treating up and down the block seeing our neighbors. For a slideshow, click on the picture of Claire and Juliet in their bug costumes.
Cabo San Lucas
We spent the last week of October in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the house of an old boss of mine. Katherine’s mom Judy joined us for a lovely week that included celebrating Judy’s birthday with a hearty feliz cumpleaños and Claire christening Judy as her “go-ma.” We also enjoyed lots of playtime on the beach and in the pool at our house, family dinners out in the nearby town of San Jose del Cabo, a romantic dinner for two on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, working together on the online New York Times crossword, and grown-up naptimes under the palapa reading and looking out at the ocean. For a slideshow, click on the picture of Claire and Juliet playing on the beach.
Juliet at 9 months
We took Juliet for her 9-month checkup this morning. Everything looks great. At 28.5″, she is at the 82nd percentile (down slightly from her 89th percentile at 6 months). At 20 lbs, 12.75 oz, she’s also at the 82nd percentile (up from 74th three months ago) so seems to be growing more out than up. At her 9-month appointment, Claire was 96th percentile in height and 85th in weight.
October at home
Here’s a grab bag of photos from around the house in October: Claire and her doll Mimi practicing potty training, Claire decorating sugar cookies, and some shots of Juliet, Katherine and my guitar taken with our new portrait lens. Last up is a picture of our household’s first, but certainly not its last, tea party. For a slideshow, click on the picture of Claire and Juliet sharing their new hot pink tent.
Late summer fun
Here’s a collection of pictures from the end of our summer, including Juliet in Claire’s chicken costume from Halloween 2007, the girls around the house including one with their new play garden, a playdate with Juliet’s friend Katie, and then a set from our trip to Mammoth Lakes where we stayed at a nice hotel and used up a few more of the free nights from my business travel. We hiked up to beautiful McLeod Lake, and also did a nature walk at Mono Lake where we saw the funny tufa towers. Last is a picture of Claire riding in her newly setup bike seat.
