My latest extended family reunion was this summer in Sun Valley, Idaho. Stu, the girls and I all drove out there on a fun road trip which included a stopover in scenic Elko, Nevada. Thanks to some savvy negotiating by my Uncle Steve, we got upgraded to a lovely cottage right on the lake, with five bedrooms and a basement full of bunk beds for kids. Highlights included a long but beautiful hike off Lake Creek Rd, lots of barbecues and visits to the pool, hanging around our cottage with my Mom, Laura, Rob, Will, my Dad and Sharon (including listening to an Avett Brothers concert from our house which was right next to the concern pavilion), a dinner and hike up at Galena Lodge, and of course my cousin Bryson juggling fire. Christmas 2009, Texas
We headed down to Houston to celebrate a late Christmas and New Year’s at my sister’s house. We started off with a trip to one of my favorite college hangouts, a tex-mex classic called Chuy’s. We then had a round of Christmas gifts for the kids. We took Claire on a visit to see butterflies at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Will then showed Claire around his trampoline, which she really really enjoyed. Not shown in the photos was the stomach flu that went around, but we all managed to get through it relatively unscathed. And last but not least we took Claire for her first ice skating adventure at an outdoor rink at the local mall. Click on the family group shot below for a slideshow.
Grandma Judy visit
Grandma Judy came for a visit in late August. Highlights included lots of playtime in the bathtub, reading books, feeding Juliet, and a tricycle ride with Claire. Judy stayed at home with Claire while Stu and I got away for a weekend with Juliet in San Francisco, where we enjoyed the relative calm and luxury of caring for only one child. Included are a few pictures of Juliet playing on the bed in our plush hotel. Click on the picture of Judy reading to Claire for a slideshow.
Summer fun (part 2)
Here’s our next set of photos from this summer. We’ve included lots of pictures of the girls together, including Juliet eating her first solid food, both of them sharing a ride in a swing, some fun at the beach and in the swimming pool, plus a shot of Claire trying on Stu’s sneakers. Click on the below picture of Juliet’s first bites (with Claire in the background showing exactly how to spread food all over the face) for a slideshow.
Juliet at 6 months
We took Juliet for her 6-month checkup this morning. Everything looks great. At 27″, she is at the 89th percentile (about the same as her 91st percentile at 4 months). At 17 lbs, 3.5 oz, she’s at the 74th percentile (up from 66th two months ago, as evidenced by the additional folds of baby fat on her thighs!). At her 6-month appointment, Claire was 96th percentile in height and 80th in weight.
Family reunion
My extended family gets together every two years for a family reunion. This year’s was held in Stowe, Vermont, where Claire and Juliet were part of an influx of young children from the next generation. Highlights included Juliet sleeping on the floor under Claire’s feet on our cross country flight, more birthday cake and presents, visiting the Ben & Jerry’s factory (and enjoying some samples at the end of a tour), lots of fun times with the Jack and Sharon, playing with Laura, Will and Rob, Claire smooching her cousin Elliot, a bathtime playdate for Claire with two of her cousins, and cousin Robbie doing a slide show on a sheet hung from the fireplace mantle. Claire’s 2nd birthday
Claire got together with a few of her friends in late June to celebrate both her birthday and her friend Riley’s in our backyard with lots of cupcakes, pushtoys, and sidewalk chalk. Also, for the statistics hounds out there, at her two-year checkup Claire was 37″ tall (99th percentile, same as 6 months ago) and 29 pounds (77th percentile, a bit less than 82nd percentile last time). Apple confusion
So far we have managed to avoid nipple confusion with Juliet, although Claire seems to have developed “apple confusion,” a condition in which all fruits are called “apple”. Click on the triangle play button below for a video demonstration:

Taiwan trip
I recently returned from a trip with my Tetra Tech friend Chih-fang (Claire’s 志芳阿姨) to visit her family in Taiwan. We started off with a day in Taipei, then headed south on the high speed rail to visit her sisters and brother in Kaohsiung and her parents in Meinong. We also took a two-day trip to the east coast of the island, to a beautiful rift valley. We stayed in the town of Yuli, where Chih-fang’s cousin Jamie teaches in a primary school. Here, we visited Yushan National Park and a mountainside covered in lilies. Of course, throughout the trip we managed to enjoy one of my favorite Taiwanese delicacies, bubble tea (珍珠奶茶). I had a great trip and everyone I met was extremely warm and friendly (and liked to comment on my height!). I was, however, glad to return home and see Claire waiting for me just outside customs.
